Health Services of North Texas Brings Its First-Ever 5K to North Lakes Park This August

The inaugural Stride n' Thrive 5K and Fun Run hits North Lakes Park on Aug. 8, celebrating National Health Center Week in Denton.

A Saturday Morning Worth Lacing Up For

The start line goes up at North Lakes Park on the morning of August 8. By 8 a.m., the Fun Run gets underway along the paths at 2001 W. Windsor Drive. Thirty minutes later, at 8:30, the 5K follows. For a park that Denton residents already use for disc golf, picnicking, and weekend walks, it is about to host something new: the first-ever Stride n’ Thrive 5K and Fun Run, organized by Health Services of North Texas.

The timing is deliberate. The event falls during National Health Center Week, an annual recognition of the federally qualified health centers that serve communities regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. For HSNT, which has long operated as one of those centers in the area, the race is a way to mark that week with something tangible — shoes on pavement, families moving together, neighbors showing up for each other.

What to Expect on Race Day

The format is straightforward. The Fun Run is designed to be accessible — a shorter, lower-pressure option that welcomes walkers, young kids, and anyone who wants to participate without committing to a timed 5K. The 5K itself, starting at 8:30 a.m., is open to runners and walkers of varying fitness levels.

North Lakes Park is a fitting backdrop. It sits on the west side of Denton, a sprawling green space with enough room to accommodate a proper course and the kind of morning crowd an event like this tends to draw. The address — 2001 W. Windsor Drive — puts it well within reach of many Denton neighborhoods, and the park’s existing paths and open areas make it a natural venue for a community race.

The event is described as bringing together runners, walkers, families, and community members for a morning focused on wellness and giving back. That framing matters. This is not a competitive race built around personal records. It is the kind of event where someone who has never run a 5K before can show up alongside someone who runs them regularly, and both can feel like they belong.

The Organization Behind the Race

Health Services of North Texas has been part of the local fabric for years. As a community health center, HSNT provides primary care, behavioral health, dental, and other services to patients across the region, including many who are uninsured or underinsured. Hosting a public 5K during National Health Center Week is a way of stepping outside the clinic walls and meeting the community in a different context — not as patients, but as neighbors.

For an organization rooted in the idea that health is a community concern, a morning race at a public park is a natural extension of that mission. The event draws a connection between the act of moving your body on a Saturday morning and the broader work of keeping a community healthy.

Denton’s Growing Calendar of Active Events

The Stride n’ Thrive 5K arrives at a moment when Denton’s calendar of participatory outdoor events continues to fill out. Later in August, the Old College Tri and 5K is also scheduled in the city, giving active residents back-to-back weekends with organized events to join. North Lakes Park itself is one of the more undersung venues in Denton for this kind of gathering — large enough for a proper event footprint, but still feeling like a neighborhood park rather than a municipal facility.

For anyone who has driven past the park on Windsor without stopping, August 8 offers a reason to pull in.

How to Get Involved

Details on registration and any entry fees are available directly through Health Services of North Texas. Given that this is the inaugural edition of the race, it is worth checking the HSNT website for updates on course maps, packet pickup, and any participant information that gets added as race day approaches.

The Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. North Lakes Park, 2001 W. Windsor Drive, Denton, TX 76207. Saturday, August 8, 2026.
